Bodega de la Haba presents German art sensation Leon Löwentraut’s first US exhibition on New York’s Lower East Side. At only 19 years of age, Löwentraut, who paints in the basement of his parent’s home in Dusseldorf, has developed a major international following and is a German media sensation.
His thick-layered brushstrokes and vibrant colors create heavily textured and visually complex compositions that are at once abstract and representational. He attributes some of the 20th Century’s leading masters as his art heroes, and elements of these men’s work are evident in his paintings.
From the raw intensity of Basquiat’s compositions and Picasso’s use of line, to Pollock’s approach to the canvas and Warhol’s marketing prowess, Löwentraut finds inspiration from those that have come before him, yet manages to create a body of work that is both timely and unique.
He has had exhibitions throughout Europe and Asia at Galerie Loeffel (Basel), Bruno Gallery (Singapore), Galerie Michael Poliza (Hamburg), The Muse (London), and several others.
